Understand your connection.
SYP Tech Speedtest measures the connection between your browser and a selected test server. The website loads separately; the large test transfers go directly to that server.
Four useful measurements
- Download · Mbps
- How quickly your browser receives data from the server.
- Upload · Mbps
- How quickly your browser sends data to the server.
- Ping · ms
- HTTP request latency to the selected server. Lower is better. This can differ from a command-line ICMP ping.
- Jitter · ms
- Variation between latency samples. A steadier connection usually has lower jitter.
Testing fast connections
Use a wired client and networking faster than the speed you want to measure. A 5 Gbps test needs adequate capacity throughout the path, including the test server’s internet connection. Wi-Fi, VPNs, busy networks, browser performance and server load can limit your result.
The server’s advertised capacity is an administrator-entered target. It is not a guarantee. Testing a server on your own LAN measures that local path, not your internet line.
How the test runs
Automatic selection checks server availability and request latency from your browser. The test measures idle latency, then uses parallel download and upload transfers. Speeds use decimal megabits per second with no artificial overhead uplift. A test is usually around 35 seconds and may consume several GB.
Open measurement engine
This release uses LibreSpeed, with a custom SYP interface and authenticated test endpoints. The engine is distributed under the GNU LGPL v3 licence. Results from different test providers can differ because their servers, routes and measurement methods differ.
